How do you know when your self-care routine needs a tune up?

Do a self check in: you might walk around feeling heavy, or notice that your posture is slumped with shoulders rolled forward.   Maybe you’re sleeping more than 7-9 hours, or maybe you aren’t sleeping enough.

You might find yourself sighing heavily, but you aren’t doing anything to express or discover what that sigh represents so you can adjust your life to feel less overwhelming.

Maybe your morning and evening routines have lost consistency, or you find yourself eating foods you know don’t support your health more than 20% of the time.

Ask yourself and be open to admitting the honest answers: are you exercising a minimum of 3 days a week? Are you stretching and connecting with your body daily? Are you spending time alone every day without distractions like TV or games? Are you journaling? Are you taking responsibility for your water intake and daily nutrition? Is your life filled with “have to’s” rather than “want to’s” ? Maybe you feel burnt out or anxious more than once in a while. Are you spending too much time on social media or watching TV or the news? Do you wake up excited to start your day or do you feel resistant to even getting out of bed?

Pay attention to these symptoms

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms the first thing I want to say is  “Hey, you’re human, and I know how that feels.”

I also want to say that paying attention to these things is important so that you can do something about it. This year has shown many people that consistent self-care is not a luxury, but a necessity. Especially if you are wanting to thrive and create the life you dream of.

I like to break self-care into two main categories: internal and external support. They go hand in hand, and I believe both are equally important to live your best life.

Internal Support

Internal support is your daily self-care routine: exercise, meditation, journaling, nutrition, healthy posture, consistent sleep patterns, play, grounding in nature, self expression, creativity and how you show up in relationships.

External Support

External support comes from seeking out and allowing mentors, peers, coaches, guides and even loved ones to give you support and accountability.  I also include consuming helpful books, videos, blogs and podcasts to this list.

If you think you can do it all on your own then you’ve adopted and are clinging to a very limiting belief my friend.   We have plenty that we can do on our own.   We have plenty that we are responsible for, but we are also a social species and wired to thrive with the support of others.

Part of our self-responsibility is setting up and utilizing our external support system. This often requires setting our prideful ego aside in order to ask for help. It takes being vulnerable with others and admitting when we need support.

This to me is extreme bravery.

The best coaches, entrepreneurs and leaders of the world have their own coaches and mentors. They understand that they need accountability and support regularly in order to embody their best selves.

The truth is, you can have great ideas all day long but it means nothing if you don’t take consistent actions to embody and live those ideas, and that takes support.

If this post triggers you or if you are thinking “yes that’s me…” but feel discouraged, I’m here to tell you it’s ok!   I’ve been there!

I still have moments when I realize I’ve fallen out of consistency with my self care; that’s why I have coaches as part of my external support system. The important thing is what you do next once you’ve recognized that something needs to change. Have some self compassion and think of how you can support yourself internally and externally today. Focus on one hour at a time.

My coaching clients have the ability to communicate with me any time they are feeling stuck, and I help them brainstorm ways to modify their self-care routines while holding them accountable over time.

Does this sound like something you want in your life? If so let’s talk. Visit the coaching page to schedule a free discovery call. You can also jump right into the deep end and work with me for 60 minutes with a Breakthrough Session.

If i’m not the right fit for you, do yourself a solid and find someone who is.  Self-care is self-love in action. When you fill your cup with love, the excess naturally overflows into the world with ease.
